Hit the Ground Running: Be Prepared for Your First Day of Work

Imagine this: The interview process is over and you’ve been offered a great new warehousing job. Congrats! While you should certainly feel excited, it’s important to remember the real work has just begun. Preparing for your first day on the job is just as important as prepping for an interview or formal presentation. The first impression you make on your managers and supervisors can set the tone of your success at your new job, and how well you acclimate to your new surroundings.

Fortunately, with the right preparation, your first day at work can be a breeze! Here are some tips to remember as you get ready.

Build in Enough Travel Time

One of the worst things you can do on your first day of work is arrive late. Make sure you’re aware of the route you’ll be taking to work and build in at least 30 minutes of additional time to get there. Whether you’re planning to drive or take public transportation, it’s imperative you take factors into account that are out of your control, such as rush hour traffic or car accident delays. Ideally, it’s best to practice your commute ahead of time during typical weekday traffic, so you have an idea as to how much travel time you’ll need.

Arrive Open-Minded

Because your first day will most likely consist of training and onboarding, come to work with ready to learn about the critical components of the job from your supervisor. This will help you stay engaged as you learn the ropes, as well as show initiative on your end to get up to speed and take the training process seriously. Ask questions and don’t be afraid to get things clarified that you don’t understand.

Dress Appropriately

When it comes to your first day in an industrial work environment, it’s best to wear something both professional and comfortable.  Because you’ll likely be covered in protective equipment, wear an outfit that’s practical but still looks presentable when you’re not on the production floor. If you’re really torn about the dress code at your new job, it never hurts to ask a hiring manager about what type of attire is most appropriate.

Preparation is critical in every aspect of the job process, and your first day in a new position is no exception!
